Sadly I do not have the time to write a full Tigers
Weekly this week. In short...
The Tigers are playing much better, but the teams they
are chasing are not cooperating. New York, up three
and a half on the Tigers, won seven in a row before
losing to Toronto on Thursday, and Cleveland maintains
a healthy five and a half game lead in the Central.
This week, the Tigers make stops in Minnesota and
Cleveland. They will need to keep winning series
(four in a row now, if you count the one-gamer over
the Blue Jays) in order to have a chance, but they
really need some sweeps. Cleveland's magic number is
11 in the Central, so things are looking bleak there.
And the crazy pitching situation is not working in the
Tigers' favor.
Curtis Granderson became the third person in MLB
history to have 20 homers, doubles, triples, and
stolen bases in a season. The feat is truly amazing,
putting him in the company of Willie Mays and Frank
Schulte. The accomplishment makes Curtis your Tiger
of the Week.

Some argue that Curtis is the team's MVP, but if the
game is on the line, I'll take Magglio every time.
Nobody has been more clutch for the Tigers than
Ordonez, who is poised to drive in 140 runs this year
(first Tiger to do that since Hank Greenberg, I
believe). The Tigers are certainly getting what they
paid for when they signed Magglio to that huge deal.
Everyone is just pencilling A-Rod in for the MVP, but
Magglio is having a magnificent season. We'll see, if
the Yanks get the Wild Card, if Rodriguez is hitting
like an MVP or ends up hitting 8th in the lineup like
last year (hahaha).
The Twins series starts with Robertson on Friday and
Yorman Bazardo on Saturday. Yikes! Jeremy Bonderman
has been shelved for the season, though this isn't too
bad a loss with the way he's been pitching. Better to
get him healed up so he can return to form in 2008.
Jair Jurrjens made his return to the rotation and
pitched a dandy against the Rangers. He's been a huge
boost. And then there's Verlander, who has been
nothing short of dominant in September.
What a win over the Blue Jays! After John McDonald
started a ridiculous double-play for the first two
outs of the ninth I was resigned to a loss. Five
singles and a walk later and I jumped about four feet
in the air in my apartment. It's those types of wins
that make you appreciate the game. I feel we were
partly repaid for that blown four-run lead in
Cleveland.
Just win, baby! That's the motto. Every loss is
another nail in the coffin. If the Tigs don't get in
this year, I hope they can make it to ninety wins
(will have to go 10-5 in their last 15 to accomplish
that).
I'm out.
